Tired of cleaning those filter cartridges , have to rinse them out all the time just to have to throw them away.  ? They require minimal maintenance , the sand / glass or filter balls they all last for roughly 5 years ! Less waste going into our land fills !!  Modes : Filter - for when you want to filter the water and circulate . ( Used most) Circulate - for when you add Chems or need to simply " stir the pot " Closed - for maintanance ie; unhooking the hoses , changing the sand ,etc. Backwash - for when you want the water to go up and out cleaning the sand from the dirt debris and etc .
